A former Civil War soldier returns to Abilene, only to find his former sweetheart on the verge of marrying the brother of a man he accidentally killed during the war. To make amends, he accepts the role of Sheriff, despite his reluctance, and refuses to reclaim his lost love. Haunted by his past, he decides not to carry a gun, but when the brother is murdered, he's forced to strap it back on and seek justice.
