A former Confederate soldier returns to his hometown, only to discover everyone believes him to be dead. He reunites with his old friend, who is now engaged to his former love, amidst a growing feud between cattlemen and farmers. The sheriff is persuaded to take up his old role again, but a mysterious past tragedy involving his friend's brother continues to haunt him.
