Mike Maquinna returns to his hometown of Gold River on Vancouver Island for his father's funeral, but instead of staying to claim his rightful place as Chief, he plans to leave and return to his life as a logger. However, his plans are disrupted by the appearance of a socialized orca whale, Luna, which becomes a public sensation. The Department of Fisheries & Oceans plans to capture Luna and reunite it with its pod, but Mike and the band disagree, seeing the spirit of his father in the whale and believing it should be allowed to choose its own fate.
