Michael Shayne, a private detective, faces a personal vendetta from Pete Rafferty, local chief of police detectives. Despite this, Shayne is hired by wealthy Eleanor Ramsey, who is being blackmailed and seeks to protect her fortune from her scheming stepchildren and their father. When Mrs. Ramsey is murdered, Rafferty attempts to frame Shayne for the crime, but suspicion falls on her brother, Buell Renslow. Shayne's secretary, Phyllis Hamilton, takes matters into her own hands to clear her boss's name.
