Sportsman Hiram Brighton hires detective Michael Shayne to keep his daughter Phyllis away from gambling, but she continues to indulge in her compulsive habit. Shayne tries to scare her off by faking the murder of her boyfriend, a gambler who's also involved with the daughter of a casino owner. When the boyfriend is actually killed, Shayne and Phyllis' Aunt Olivia, an avid reader of murder mysteries, team up to uncover the identity of the real killer.
