In the aftermath of India's independence from British rule, the country was plunged into chaos and violence. The divisions created by the British between Hindus and Muslims were exacerbated, leading to widespread bloodshed and displacement. The story follows Puro, a young woman who was recently married to Ramchand, but was abducted by Rashid and taken to Pakistan, where she was forced to become the second wife of an abusive man. Puro's sister-in-law, Hamida, sets out to find her, aided by a remorseful Rashid, and eventually locates her in Pakistan. However, Lajjo is now trapped in a miserable situation, controlled by her cruel "Amma" and her husband. Puro and Lajjo hatch a plan to escape, but their success is uncertain, leaving them facing a desperate and uncertain future.
