In the small town, Mayor Timothy "Pop" Owens faces a crisis when his son Tom helps Sam Skelly's henchmen rob the bank to pay off his gambling debts. With bank examiners arriving in two days, "Pop" decides to make the bank the beneficiary of a trust fund for his daughter and Tom, which covers the stolen money. To avoid imprisonment, "Pop" asks Skelly to hire a hitman to kill him. Skelly hires three ruthless outlaws, the Cherokee Brothers, but they're outdrawn by the Three Mesquiteers, Tucson, Story, and Lullaby, who happen to be in town. The Mesquiteers win a fight against the Cherokee brothers and run them out of town, leading "Pop" to mistakenly believe they're the ones he wants to kill. The Mesquiteers agree to "Pop"'s plan, but secretly work out a counter plot to save him.
