Saladin, ruler of the kingdoms surrounding Jerusalem, launches a campaign against the Christians after a convoy of Muslim pilgrims, including his sister, is sacked. He takes Jerusalem and gains control of most of the Middle East. The European powers respond with the 3rd Crusade, led by Richard the Lionheart, but Saladin's forces hold off the recapture of Jerusalem. Eventually, Saladin negotiates with Richard, who he respects as a honorable leader, and the Holy Land remains under Muslim control.
