A young girl's aspirations to become a dancer are shattered by her mother's sudden passing. She relocates to live with her estranged father, who resides in a predominantly African American neighborhood on the opposite side of town. The girl is one of the few white students at her new school, where she forms a bond with Chenille and eventually falls in love with Chenille's brother, Derek.
