After returning from the Civil War with his sons, Cage "Pa" Mondier is ambushed and fatally wounded by southern raiders. He dies shortly after arriving home in Winslow, Arkansas. His sons, Whipple and Till, are accused of cattle rustling by a self-righteous colonel who seeks to punish all local men who fought for the Union. Despite the colonel's daughter being engaged to marry one of the Mondier boys, the family faces open hostility and danger.
