A space shuttle explosion brings an alien virus to Earth, altering human DNA and causing bizarre behavior. As a psychiatrist, Carol Bennell notices the changes in her clients, then her former husband, and eventually the population at large. With the help of her friends, a researcher and a scientist, she discovers the virus affects humans while they sleep and that her son, who had chickenpox as a baby, may hold the key to saving humanity from the outbreak.
