Daniel Wroughton Craig was born on March 2, 1968, at 41 Liverpool Road, Chester, Cheshire, England. His parents, Timothy John Wroughton Craig and Carol Olivia (Williams),had a tumultuous marriage that ended in 1972. Craig's mother, an art teacher, raised him and his older sister, Lea, in Liverpool and Hoylake, Wirral, where he developed a passion for acting.
Craig's interest in acting was nurtured by his mother, who arranged visits to the Liverpool Everyman Theatre. He began acting in school plays at the age of six and made his debut in the Frodsham Primary School production of "Oliver!". His mother was instrumental in fostering his artistic aspirations.
At the age of 14, Craig played roles in "Oliver", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella" at Hilbre High School in West Kirby, Wirral. He left school at 16 to audition for the National Youth Theatre's (NYT) troupe, where he was accepted and moved to London.
As a struggling actor, Craig worked as a waiter and toiled in restaurant kitchens with the NYT. He performed on tours to Valencia, Spain, and Moscow, Russia, under the direction of Edward Wilson. Craig's persistence paid off when he was accepted into the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1988, where he studied alongside Ewan McGregor and Alistair McGowan.
Craig's early career included roles in The Power of One (1992),Our Friends in the North (1996),and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001). He gained international recognition for his performances in Road to Perdition (2002) and Layer Cake (2004).
In 2005, Craig was named as the sixth actor to portray James Bond, a role that cemented his status as a global superstar. He has since starred in Casino Royale (2006),Quantum of Solace (2008),Skyfall (2012),Spectre (2015),and No Time to Die (2021).
Craig's reserved demeanor and avoidance of the showbiz-party-red-carpet milieu have made him a unique and successful Bond. He is the first blond actor to play Bond and the first to be born after the start of the film series.
In recognition of his services to film and theatre, Craig was appointed Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2022 Queen's New Year's Honours.
