Emma Lowell, an art history professor, spends two months in Padua, Italy, teaching and researching the origins of an antique Italian wedding veil that she and her friends bought together. The legend says that the veil's possessor will find true love, which seems to be the case for her recently married friend Avery. Emma, who is still reeling from her latest break-up, is romance-shy and skeptical about love. She discovers that the veil originated in a two-centuries-old family lace shop in Burano, where she meets Paolo Di Stefano, the next generation in that lace-making family. Paolo joins Emma on a quest to uncover the veil's history, and as they fall for each other, they must decide whether to act on their feelings despite the geographic distance and Paolo's family struggles.
