Industrialist Arthur Birling and his family celebrate their daughter's engagement when they're unexpectedly visited by Inspector Goole, who reveals the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith. As they claim not to know her, the inspector shows how each family member contributed to her downfall, either by dismissing her from work or having a sexual relationship and abandoning her.
