Al and Birdy, former high school friends with vastly different personalities, reunited after serving in the Vietnam War. Al, the athletic and popular extrovert, suffered physical injuries requiring reconstructive surgery. Birdy, an introvert with a fascination for birds, returned emotionally scarred, having been missing in action for a month. He remained silent, in a near comatose state. Al visits Birdy at the institution, trying to help him recover while dealing with his own post-war mental state.
