Cowboy Frank T. Hopkins, a US Cavalry scout with an Indian mother, is haunted by his past after being wounded in the Wounded Knee Massacre. He joins Buffalo Bill's Wild West show as a horse stuntman and becomes known for his horse racing skills. An Arabian sheikh challenges him to enter the "Ocean of Fire" race, a grueling endurance test across the desert that has claimed many lives. Hopkins accepts the challenge, riding his trusty mustang Hidalgo, a non-thoroughbred.
