Molly Mahoney, the manager of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, is a 23-year-old woman who feels stuck in her job despite her former promise as a composer and piano player. The store, owned by the eccentric Mr. Edward Magorium, attracts a loyal customer base, including Eric Applebaum, a lonely hat collector. When Mr. Magorium's shoes wear out, he hires an accountant to settle the store's accounts, revealing that he is 243 years old and nearing the end of his life. He passes on the Emporium to Molly, giving her a mysterious cube called the Congreve cube, and asks her to take over the business.
