In Missouri, during the Civil War, two friends, Jake and Jack Bull, join the Bushwhackers, a group of irregulars loyal to the South, after Union soldiers kill Jack Bull's father. The group consists of a diverse range of individuals, including a freed slave named Daniel Holt, who is beholden to the man who purchased his freedom. As they skirmish and hide, they receive aid from a young widow named Sue Lee, who becomes romantically involved with Jack Bull. When Jack Bull is severely injured, Jake accompanies Sue Lee to a safe farm in the south. However, the Bushwhackers, driven by a desire for revenge, launch a raid into Kansas, and Jake must confront the harsh realities of war and decide where his honor truly lies.
