In the midst of the Potsdam conference in July 1945, a journalist named Jake Geismer arrives in Berlin, donning a captain's uniform to facilitate his movements. He's on a mission to find his old flame, Lena, who has become a prostitute desperate to escape the city. However, his search is complicated when he discovers that Lena is being kept by her driver, Corporal Tully, a sadistic individual with a cheerful demeanor. As a murdered body washes up in the Russian sector of Potsdam, Jake becomes the only one interested in solving the crime. Amidst the chaos, U.S. personnel are busy tracking down Nazis, the Russians and Americans are on the hunt for German rocket scientists, and Lena harbors secrets of her own.
