In 1884 Yonkers, New York, Dolly Gallagher-Levi, a skilled matchmaker, sets up men with women for marriage, despite her own unhappy marriage experience. Her latest client is Horace Vandergelder, a penny-pinching store owner who works his clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, to exhaustion. The two clerks plan a day off in New York to meet and kiss a girl, unaware that their target, Irene Molloy, is one of Horace's potential brides. Meanwhile, Dolly may be ready for marriage again, despite her words.
