Albert joins the war effort after his cherished horse is requisitioned by the cavalry, driving him to enlist in World War I.
Albert's horse Joey is sold to the Cavalry, and as the First World War breaks out, Joey embarks on a treacherous journey across war-torn Europe to survive. Meanwhile, Albert joins the British Army, gets wounded in the Battle of the Somme, and later learns about a horse found in no man's land while recovering in hospital.
