Amanda Laura Bynes was born on April 3, 1986, in Thousand Oaks, California, to Lynn (Organ),a dental assistant, and Richard Bynes, a dentist. Her father had Lithuanian, Irish, and Polish ancestry, while her mother was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent from Toronto.
Amanda's interest in acting and performing began at the tender age of three, when she would recite her older sister Jillian's lines alongside her during plays. It was clear to her family and friends that she would one day shine as a star.
Her acting debut came in 1996, when she landed a role as a newcomer on the popular television show All That. Her performance quickly gained her popularity, particularly for her portrayal of Ask Ashley, a feisty little girl who ran an advice column and got angry when reading letters.
In 1999, Amanda was given her own variety show, The Amanda Show, in which she starred in all the skits except for Totally Kyle. The following year, she co-starred with Frankie Muniz in the film Big Fat Liar, playing the role of Kaylee, a friend who helps Jason regain his father's trust.
Amanda's personal life was also taking shape, as she began dating Taran Killam, her co-star from The Amanda Show and Big Fat Liar. She was just 15 years old when the show ended its run and won a Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award.
In 2002, Amanda began co-starring with Jennie Garth in the television series What I Like About You, playing the role of Holly, a 16-year-old girl who moves in with her sister after their father decides to move to Japan. She also celebrated her Sweet 16th birthday and obtained her driver's license on April 3, 2002.
The following year, Amanda won two KCA Awards and starred in the film What a Girl Wants, alongside Colin Firth and Kelly Preston. She continued to act in What I Like About You and eventually broke up with Taran Killam.
Amanda's talent as a comedienne was recognized, and on April 3, 2004, she celebrated her 18th birthday at the 17th Annual KCA Awards, where she won an award for her role in What a Girl Wants. She graduated from Thousand Oaks High School's independent study program on June 10, 2004, and filmed Lovewrecked in 2004.
