MacDowell's academic journey began at Winthrop College, located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she was later discovered by a representative from Wilhelmina Models during a trip to Los Angeles. This discovery led to her signing with Elite Model Management in New York City in 1978.
MacDowell made her film debut in the 1984 movie Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and subsequently honed her acting skills by studying method acting at the esteemed Actors Studio.
