Biography

Basil Pao embarked on a photographic journey in 1980 upon his return to Hong Kong after a decade-long stint in the United States, where he served as an art director for prominent recording companies such as Atlantic and Polygram in New York and Warner Brothers Records in Los Angeles.

During this period, he worked on the book for the Monty Python film "Life of Brian", marking the beginning of his collaboration with Michael Palin, with whom he would go on to co-author ten illustrated books based on the BBC travel series "Pole to Pole", "Full Circle", "Hemingway Adventure", "Sahara", "Himalaya", and "New Europe".

In addition to his work with Palin, Pao has authored several books, including "Hands", "China Revealed", and most recently, "Yi'Jing-Book of Changes", which accompanied his "The Great Walls of China Series" exhibition.

Pao has also created limited edition collections, such as "AMAN", "Bhutan", and "AMAN2" for Amanresorts, as well as "OM-Ordinary Moments", "CMYK - China", and "Shan Shui" for Printer Trento.

His travel essays and assignments, including his photography for Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor" and "Little Buddha", have been featured in publications and exhibitions worldwide.
