Biography

Billie Hayes was born on August 5, 1924, in the small town of DuQuoin, Illinois, where she began her journey in show business at the tender age of 9 as a talented tap dancer performing in local clubs. Her parents, although encouraging, did not push her to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, allowing her to develop a passion for performing that was all her own.

As she entered her teenage years, Hayes joined a 14-piece orchestra and began performing throughout the Midwest, honing her craft and gaining valuable experience. After gaining confidence in her abilities, she took her act to Chicago, where she was discovered and cast in a New York revue that toured the United States and Canada.

Hayes' big break came when she landed a part in the Broadway production of "New Faces of 1956" at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, where she performed alongside other talented artists and showcased her impressive vocal range. The show ran for an impressive 220 performances between June 14, 1956, and December 22, 1956, with Hayes' standout performance in the song "The Greatest Invention" leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

Despite being offered the role of Mammy Yokum in the Broadway production of "Li'l Abner," Hayes was unable to take on the part due to her contract with the producers of "New Faces." However, she would later succeed Charlotte Rae in the role and go on to play the part in the 1959 film version and the 1971 television version, cementing her status as a talented and versatile performer.

Hayes' career continued to flourish, and she appeared in a Las Vegas show, where she was discovered by Sid Krofft, who was preparing to produce the television show H.R. Pufnstuf. With only two actresses auditioning for the role of "Witchiepoo," Hayes' unique maniacal cackle and energetic performance won her the part, which she played to great acclaim.

Hayes went on to appear in the next Krofft brothers' television show, Lidsville (1971),as well as making guest appearances on other live-action television shows throughout the 1970s and until the mid-1980s, when she transitioned to voice acting, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her illustrious career.
