Biography

Billie Hayes embarked upon her illustrious career in the world of entertainment on August 5, 1924, in the quaint town of DuQuoin, Illinois, where her journey first took flight at the tender age of 9. It was during this early period that she began to hone her skills as a tap dancer, captivating audiences in local clubs with her rhythmic movements. Her parents, though not overly pushy, offered their unwavering support, allowing Billie to explore her passion for the entertainment industry, unfettered by excessive pressure.

As a teenager, Hayes embarked upon a remarkable musical journey, which began with her membership in a 14-piece orchestra that traversed the Midwest, providing her with a wealth of experience and exposure to diverse audiences. Her impressive skills and captivating stage presence eventually led her to perform her own solo act in the vibrant city of Chicago, where her talents were discovered by industry professionals who were impressed by her unique style and charisma.

Leonard Sillman's esteemed Broadway production, "New Faces of 1956," marked a pivotal turning point in the career of the talented Hayes, as she secured a significant role within the show and went on to deliver outstanding performances for an impressive 220 consecutive nights at the renowned Ethel Barrymore Theatre, from June 14, 1956, to December 22, 1956, showcasing her remarkable vocal abilities by singing the captivating song "The Greatest Invention".

The creative minds behind the iconic Broadway production of "Li'l Abner" had their sights set on the talented Hayes for the pivotal role of Mammy Yokum, but alas, the producers of "New Faces" refused to relinquish their contract with the esteemed actress, thereby denying her the opportunity to shine in this coveted part. Instead, the esteemed Charlotte Rae was tapped for the role, a decision that would ultimately prove to be a wise one, as Rae would go on to make a lasting impression on audiences in her subsequent portrayal of Mrs. Garrett on the beloved television series "The Facts of Life", which premiered in 1979.

Meanwhile, Hayes would bide her time, waiting for the perfect moment to take the stage as Mammy Yokum, and eventually, she would get her chance to shine in the 1959 film adaptation of "Li'l Abner", as well as in the 1971 television version of the production.

It was a Las Vegas show where a fellow cast member made a recommendation that would have a profound impact on the career of a soon-to-be television star. This individual suggested the talented actress to none other than Sid Krofft, who was busy preparing for the production of the popular children's television show "H.R. Pufnstuf."

Hayes's professional trajectory continued to unfold with her inclusion in the Krofft brothers' subsequent television project, "Lidsville", which premiered in 1971. Moreover, she made significant guest appearances on various live-action television shows throughout the 1970s, effectively solidifying her presence on the small screen. As the 1980s progressed, Hayes underwent a transformation, gradually transitioning her focus towards voice acting, marking a significant shift in her career path.
