Born in the borough of Queens, New York, Costas is the son of Jayne (Quinlan) and John George Costas, an electrical engineer, whose roots are Greek, tracing back to the island of Kalymnos in the Aegean Sea, and his mother's heritage is a blend of Irish and German descent.
Growing up primarily in Commack, New York, Costas attended Commack High School South, where he graduated before pursuing higher education. He majored in communications at Syracuse University, but left school prior to graduating to accept a job at the renowned radio station KMOX in St. Louis.
Later in his career, Costas received an honorary degree from Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, a testament to his achievements in the field of broadcasting.
