Biography

Calvin Brown, a trailblazing figure in the realm of Hollywood stunts, has etched his name in the annals of history as the first African American stuntman to receive recognition within the Hollywood industry. His impressive repertoire includes doubling for the illustrious Bill Cosby in the popular network series "I Spy". Furthermore, Brown holds the distinction of being one of the original founders of the Black Stuntmen's Association and the Sober Living House, two esteemed organizations that have had a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals.

Calvin, a notable individual, entered this world on April 23, 1936, in the quaint town of Farmersville, Louisiana, to his loving parents, Sylvester Brown and Ida Mae Washington Brown. He was the second-born among a family of eight siblings, and his family's decision to relocate to Grambling, Louisiana, when he was merely two years old, marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

From a tender age of nine, Calvin embarked on a professional journey, commencing his tenure with the prestigious United States Postal Service in a role that showcased his exceptional organizational skills as a 2nd Class Special Delivery Mail Messenger. This inaugural venture into the world of employment afforded him a modest yet respectable compensation package, with a salary of nine cents per letter, translating to a monthly income of up to thirty or forty dollars.

As he navigated the complexities of his youth, Calvin simultaneously pursued his academic aspirations, enrolling in undergraduate studies at the esteemed Grambling State University. Mirroring his growth and maturity, his professional endeavors also underwent a metamorphosis, as his salary underwent a significant increase to a more substantial $1.92 per letter.

Calvin's academic journey culminated in 1957, as he received his degree and set his sights on the sun-kissed state of California. There, he embarked on a new chapter in his life, joining the esteemed ranks of the United States Postal Service. Simultaneously, he pursued his passion for the silver screen, landing a role as an extra in various Hollywood productions. His big break arrived with the film "Drums Over Africa," where he initially began as an extra, only to soon transition into the world of stunts. Calvin's multifaceted talent shone brightly as he took on the role of the chief, a runaway slave, and, with impressive skill, executed all the Black stunt work featured in the movie, thereby making a lasting impact on the film.

Calvin's inaugural foray into the realm of stunts commenced with a most unconventional yet undeniably audacious feat - tumbling out of a tree, a daring act he successfully executed a staggering six times, earning a substantial sum of six hundred dollars in the process, with the entirety of the remuneration presented to him in the form of crisp, one hundred dollar bills.

As his proficiency in the art of stunt work continued to flourish, Calvin went on to assume the role of a double for the esteemed Bill Cosby in the popular television series "I Spy", while also contributing his skills to various other television programs and cinematic productions, solidifying his reputation as a seasoned and accomplished stuntman.

Calvin's professional journey was marked by a pivotal yet challenging episode, where a severe leg injury occurred while he was working on The Split, resulting in a prolonged period of two years spent in a straight leg cast.

Calvin's remarkable journey as a stuntman was marked by a series of unfortunate events, as a debilitating leg injury forced him to confront the harsh reality of an unreliable income, ultimately leading him down a path of self-destructive tendencies.

In a desperate attempt to cope with the emotional and physical pain, Calvin turned to drugs and alcohol, a choice that would have far-reaching and devastating consequences for his life.

As the years went by, Calvin found himself lost and disconnected from the world, wandering aimlessly through the wilderness, struggling to come to terms with his circumstances.

However, it was during this dark period that Calvin discovered the strength and resilience to turn his life around, seeking help at the Salvation Army's Harbor Lights Rehabilitation center, a beacon of hope in the midst of his turmoil.

Under the guidance of the center's dedicated staff, Calvin was able to confront his demons and slowly but surely, he began to rebuild his life, finally achieving sobriety after a grueling nine-month battle.

Calvin's unwavering dedication to maintaining sobriety led him to establish the Sober Living House in the year 1990, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Throughout the ensuing years, Calvin has continued to pursue his passion for the film industry, taking on the role of stunt coordinator, a profession that has allowed him to utilize his unique set of skills.

Currently, Calvin resides in the state of California, where he shares his life with his loving wife, Ruth Ann, in a beautiful and serene environment that has undoubtedly played a significant role in his personal growth and development.
