Frederick Carlton "Carl" Lewis, a legendary American track and field athlete, was born on July 1, 1961. His illustrious career, spanning from 1979 to 1996, was marked by numerous accolades, including ten Olympic medals, with nine of them being gold, and ten World Championships medals, with eight of them being gold.
Lewis was a dominant force in the world of track and field, particularly in the sprinting and long jumping events. He consistently topped the world rankings in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and long jump events from 1981 to the early 1990s. His impressive record-breaking feats included setting world records in the 100 meters, 4 × 100 meters, and 4 × 200 meters relays.
Additionally, his world record in the indoor long jump, set in 1984, has remained unbeaten to this day. Lewis's remarkable 65-consecutive-victory streak in the long jump, achieved over a span of ten years, is one of the longest undefeated streaks in the sport.
