Charlie McDonnell, a multifaceted individual from Bath, Somerset, England, now residing in Toronto, Canada, has made a significant impact in the online world. Initially, Charlie set up a YouTube channel in April 2007, posting video blogs to a small audience. However, their fortunes took a dramatic turn just a month later when one of their videos, "How to get featured on YouTube," coincidentally, was featured on the front of the UK YouTube homepage.
This unexpected success led to Charlie's rise to prominence in online media. They have since made appearances on traditional television, working with BBC Switch on a project called ChartJackers in 2009. ChartJackers was a collaborative effort between four YouTube personalities, aiming to "high-jack" the UK Singles Chart by releasing a song to raise money for charity. The single reached #1 in the UK Independent Charts and #36 in the UK Singles Chart, generating over £10,000 for Children In Need.
Charlie has also made appearances on various television programs, including BBC Breakfast, The Gadget Show, Sky News, Lily Allen and Friends, and those annoying confused.com adverts. When not glued to their computer screen, Charlie occasionally ventures out into the real world, participating in notable events such as the Euro 2008 Google Zeitgeist conference, speaking at 2009's Tech@Google and Tomorrow's Web conferences, and being invited to attend the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and Comic Con, courtesy of Disney.
