Keyser's involvement in theater began during his final two years at Harvard College, where he appeared in numerous theatrical productions. After graduating from Harvard, he went on to attend Harvard Law School, earning honors and receiving job offers from prestigious New York City law firms.
However, during his time at law school, Keyser's focus shifted towards screenwriting, and he met future writing partner Amy Lippman. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1985 and, along with Lippman, moved to New York City to pursue a career in television writing.
In 1988, they relocated to Los Angeles, where they leveraged their legal backgrounds to write teleplays for popular shows such as L.A. Law and Equal Justice. They eventually landed the opportunity to write and produce the hit show Sisters and Eddie Dodd from 1991 to 1996.
Keyser and Lippman established themselves as a formidable team in the television industry, and their collaboration on Party of Five, a prime-time family-oriented soap opera, catapulted them to success. The show, which aired from 1994 to 2000, revolved around the Salinger family, who were left orphaned after their parents were killed in a car accident.
The show's narrative explored themes of relationships, friction, romance, school, work, growing up, and life-and-death, as the eldest son took on the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings. Party of Five received widespread acclaim, including the Golden Globe Award for "Best Drama Series" in 1996.
Keyser and Lippman were also recognized for their work on the show, with Keyser receiving the Humanitarias Prize for the episode "Thanksgiving," which dealt with the characters' confrontation with the drunk driver responsible for their parents' deaths.
The show's cast, including Neve Campbell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Matthew Fox, went on to achieve success in film and television, and Keyser and Lippman continued to develop new TV programs, including Significant Others and Time of Your Life, a spin-off of Party of Five.
Today, Keyser resides in Los Angeles with his wife, an attorney, and their two children.
