Biography

Christopher Hovelle Wood, a celebrated English screenwriter and novelist, entered the world on November 5, 1935, within the boundaries of the London borough of Lambeth, a district in South London, England.

Wood's literary journey was a remarkable one, encompassing a diverse array of genres that showcased his remarkable versatility as a writer. His semi-autobiographical literary fiction allowed him to draw upon his own life experiences, infusing his stories with a depth and authenticity that resonated with readers. His foray into historical fiction transported readers to bygone eras, immersing them in meticulously researched settings and characters that felt as real as the people and places they knew.

But Wood's literary range didn't stop there. He also ventured into the realm of adventure novels, crafting tales of action and suspense that kept readers on the edge of their seats. And, in a bold departure from his usual literary fare, he even dabbled in pseudonymous humorous erotica, pushing the boundaries of his creativity and exploring new avenues of storytelling.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Wood also made a name for himself in the world of screenwriting. He adapted two iconic James Bond novels, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker, for the big screen, bringing the beloved characters and stories to life in a way that captivated audiences worldwide.

Wood's formative years were significantly impacted by his parents' proactive decision to relocate him to a boarding arrangement at Edward VI Grammar School in Norwich, a strategic move undertaken to safeguard him from the dangers posed by The Blitz, a prolonged and devastating period of aerial bombardment that ravaged the city. However, fate had other plans, as the very school that was meant to provide Wood with a safe haven was subsequently bombed into rubble during the Baedeker Blitz in April 1942, a catastrophic event that left a lasting imprint on his life.

Undeterred, Wood persevered and continued his educational pursuits at King's College Junior School in London, where he encountered additional challenges, this time in the form of difficulties with the school staff, a situation that would likely have tested his resolve and resilience.

Wood earned his academic credentials from Peterhouse, Cambridge University, in the year 1960, successfully completing degrees in both economics and law. His academic pursuits were soon interrupted by a stint in the military, where he was stationed in Cyprus. This experience would later serve as the inspiration for his second novel, Terrible Hard, Says Alice. The novel received widespread acclaim, with renowned novelist William Boyd singling it out as one of the most convincing portrayals of war ever committed to print.

Wood's remarkable experiences in the vast and diverse continent of Africa served as the catalyst for the creation of his first literary endeavor, the novel "Make it Happen to Me". This work was preceded by his second novel, "A Dove Against Death", a thrilling adventure tale that was meticulously researched by Wood himself.

The novel "A Dove Against Death" was born from Wood's extensive research into the fascinating story of a dove that was dispatched to the south-western region of Africa. Additionally, Wood's investigation delved into the history of a wireless station constructed by the Germans in Togoland, which was subsequently destroyed by the British.

The intricate and complex events surrounding this wireless station, which played a pivotal role in the tumultuous history of the region, undoubtedly left a profound impression on Wood, inspiring him to craft a captivating narrative that would transport readers to the heart of the African continent.

Prior to devoting himself to a full-time writing career, Wood held a position as an account executive at the esteemed advertising agency Masius Wynne-Williams, where he was responsible for overseeing and managing a diverse range of national brands.

In his spare moments, during the daily train commutes that punctuated his busy schedule, Wood would often jot down notes and ideas that would eventually evolve into his debut literary works.

Wood's literary endeavors were met with obstacles from the outset. His debut novel, initially titled Nobody Here But Us Pickens, underwent a name change to Make it Happen to Me, only to meet with disappointing sales figures.

Notwithstanding the obstacles he encountered, Wood managed to achieve significant success with his Confessions series, which was published by Sphere paperbacks, a renowned publishing house. The inaugural installment of the series, aptly titled Confessions of a Window Cleaner, underwent numerous editions, a testament to its enduring popularity and widespread appeal.

Christopher Wood, a notable individual, breathed his last on the ninth day of May in the year 2015, at his residential abode situated in the picturesque southwest region of France.

The renowned author, Wood, has left behind a lasting impression on the literary world, as his remarkable life comes to a close. Despite his passing, his remarkable offspring, consisting of a son and a daughter, will forever carry on his name and his legacy.
