Clement Virgo is a renowned film director in Canada, known for his impressive body of work in both television and feature films. One of his most notable projects is the six-part miniseries adaptation of Lawrence Hill's novel "The Book of Negroes" (2015),which he co-wrote and directed. The series premiered to record-breaking numbers on the CBC in Canada and BET in the United States, and received widespread critical acclaim, winning twelve Canadian Screen Awards and earning two U.S. Critics Choice Television Awards nominations.
The series also received several other accolades, including the 2015 Cablefax Award and C21 International Drama Award for Best Miniseries, as well as four NAACP Image Award nominations for Best Miniseries, Best Actor (Cuba Gooding Jr.),Best Actress (Aunjanue Ellis),and Best Writing (Virgo, Hill).
In addition to his work on "The Book of Negroes," Virgo has also directed several other TV shows, including "American Crime" (2015),"The Wire" (2002),and the entire first season of the OWN network drama series "Greenleaf" (2016),for which he also serves as Executive Producer alongside Oprah Winfrey.
Virgo's feature film credits include the 2007 boxing drama "Poor Boy's Game," which won several audience awards at festivals such as Berlin, Toronto, and the Atlantic Film Festival. Since 2010, he has presented a series of intimate talks to celebrate Black History Month in Toronto, featuring notable guests such as Lee Daniels, Norman Jewison, Spike Lee, Pam Grier, John Singleton, and Chris Tucker.
