Colm Wilkinson is a renowned Irish singer-songwriter and actor, best known for his iconic roles in musical theatre. Born in Ireland, Wilkinson began his career playing in various Irish bands before being cast as Judas Iscariot in the Dublin production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972.
In 1976, Wilkinson sang the part of Ché Guevara on the concept album for the musical Evita, but instead of auditioning for the role when the production launched in London, Wilkinson launched a solo career as a singer-songwriter.
Wilkinson's solo album, released in 1977, charted in the Irish charts for eight weeks at Number 1. He eventually represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978 with his own composition "Born to Sing", earning 5th place in the European competition.
Wilkinson has had a long and distinguished career in musical theatre, starring in productions such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, and Jekyll and Hyde. He has won numerous awards for his performances, including the Helen Hayes Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Theatre World Award.
In addition to his work in musical theatre, Wilkinson has also released several solo albums, including "Broadway and Beyond: The Concert Songs" in 2010. He has also performed in various concerts and tours, including a cross-Canada tour in 2007 and a solo concert at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in 2011.
Wilkinson is a Founding Artist of Theatre 20, a musical theatre company in Toronto, and has performed in various productions with the company. He will appear as Bishop Myriel in the upcoming film production of Les Misérables, set to be released in December 2012.
