Corey Fischer is a renowned actor, writer, director, and teacher with a career spanning over five decades. He has been creating and performing theatre, with a focus on collaborative creation, performance, and improvisation. His work often incorporates mask, puppetry, and music, showcasing his versatility and creativity.
Recent notable performances include his portrayal of Shimon Peres in Marin Theatre Company's west-coast premiere of "Oslo" and his solo play with music, "Lightning in the Brain," which ran for eight weeks at The Marsh in San Francisco.
Fischer co-founded Traveling Jewish Theatre (TJT) in 1978 with Albert Greenberg and Naomi Newman, working with the company for 34 years until its closure in 2012. During his tenure, he collaborated on over two dozen productions, including his solo show "Sometimes We Need a Story More Than Food," which was one of the Los Angeles Times' top 10 productions of 1993 and won a Marin county playwriting fellowship.
Fischer has also received numerous awards and commissions, including a Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award for his play "See Under: Love" and recent commissions for "I'm Calling the Police" and "In the Maze of Our Own Lives."
In addition to his work with TJT, Fischer has had notable performances in classic American plays, including his portrayal of Willy Loman in TJT's production of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" and his role as Rabbi Saunders in "The Chosen" at TheatreWorks/Silicon Valley.
As a director, Fischer has worked on productions such as Brecht's "The Good Person of Setzuan" at California State University, East Bay. Before founding TJT, he worked in film, television, and theatre in Los Angeles, New York, and Vancouver, B.C., collaborating with legendary figures such as Jeff Corey, Del Close, Robert Altman, and Joseph Chaikin.
