Biography

Craig Ashley David MBE, a British singer-songwriter, achieved widespread recognition in 1999 following his appearance on the hit single "Re-Rewind" by Artful Dodger. Born on May 5, 1981, in Southampton, Hampshire, David is the sole offspring of Tina Loftus, a retail assistant, and George David, a skilled carpenter. His father, of Afro-Grenadian descent, and his mother, of Anglo-Jewish heritage, with ancestral ties to the renowned Accurist watch-making company, brought a rich cultural diversity to David's upbringing. However, his parents' separation when he was just eight years old led to him being raised solely by his mother.

David's educational journey began at Bellemoor School, a significant milestone in his life that would later influence his creative expression. Unfortunately, his time at Southampton City College was marred by bullying, an experience that would have a profound impact on his emotional well-being and ultimately inspire the creation of a song that would resonate with others who have faced similar struggles.

In 2005, David's emotional response to his past torment was channeled into a song called "Johnny", a powerful and poignant reflection of his experiences as a victim of bullying. This song would serve as a testament to his resilience and capacity for emotional expression, and would likely provide solace to those who have faced similar challenges.

David's family has a rich musical heritage, with his father, George, being a talented bassist for the reggae band Ebony Rockers. As a teenager, David would often accompany his father to local dance clubs, where he would be given the opportunity to take the microphone and share his own musical talents with others. These early experiences would lay the foundation for his future success as a musician and artist.

David's musical journey began with a unique opportunity to collaborate on a B-side track, "I'm Ready," for the British group Damage's cover of Eric Clapton's iconic hit "Wonderful Tonight." This early exposure laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.

As his skills continued to develop, David started lending his vocals to the UK garage duo Artful Dodger, contributing to tracks like "Something" and "What Ya Gonna Do." His talent soon caught the attention of Wildstar Records, whose co-owner, Colin Lester, was impressed by the first song he heard, "Walking Away."

This breakthrough led to a visit from Lester to David's home in Southampton, where he was struck by the abundance of 12" vinyl records stacked in David's bedroom, a testament to his passion and dedication to music.

David's impressive performance left a lasting impression on Lester, leading him to conclude that the young artist was genuinely talented and not simply going through the motions. This conviction ultimately led Lester to extend an offer to David, extending an invitation to join his label as a developmental artist.
