Born to a naval officer, the subject spent a significant portion of his childhood traveling to various locations based on his father's assignments. After completing prep school in Maryland, he attended Trinity University in San Antonio for a year before serving in the Army Signals Corps in Vietnam. Following his military service, he returned to Maryland and worked in construction for a brief period before relocating to Chicago in 1968 to join the Cole Marionettes theatrical troupe as a puppeteer, touring the Midwest.
Two years later, he enrolled in the Goodman School of Drama, graduating in 1973. Recognizing the need to hone his acting skills, he dedicated the next three years to performing on radio and stage productions such as Under Milkwood, Dandelion Wine, and Lunching.
The actor made his screen debut in 1976 and was soon typecast in roles that leveraged his authoritative presence, including detectives, motorcycle cops, and army officers. He appeared in TV series like Angel Street, NYPD Blue, Turks, and Boss, as well as films such as Vice Versa, Excessive Force, and The Fugitive.
Goldring's versatility enabled him to take on a wide range of roles, including Grumpy, one of the Joker's minions in The Dark Knight, a Starfleet officer and Cardassian Legate in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and the Alpha Hirogen Karr in the World War II holodeck simulation of Star Trek: Voyager.
Colleagues often praised Goldring as a consummate professional, willing to tackle challenging roles. He passed away on December 2, 2022, at the age of 76, due to kidney failure in Chicago.
