Biography

Darius Clark Monroe is a multifaceted creative force, hailing from Houston but currently residing and working in Brooklyn. As a writer, producer, and director, Monroe has made a name for himself by crafting a diverse array of documentary and fiction films that delve into the intricate inner workings of the human experience.

Monroe's body of work is characterized by its exploration of the numerous experiences and environments that shape our psyche and behavior, often tackling complex themes such as fear, vulnerability, spirituality, and the role of media in our lives. He employs a range of visual techniques and instruments to convey these themes, resulting in a unique and captivating cinematic style.

Some of Monroe's most notable credits include writing and directing for the Peabody Award-winning HBO series Random Acts of Flyness. He also directed Black 14, a thought-provoking archival social study that examines cognitive dissonance through media coverage of a 1969 racial protest at the University of Wyoming. This film has been screened at numerous festivals, including Sundance, Tribeca, True/False, BlackStar, Chicago, and Camden, and received a 2019 National Magazine Award.

Monroe's autobiographical film Evolution of a Criminal was awarded the IDA Emerging Filmmaker Award and the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame, and received nominations for an Independent Spirit Award and a Cinema Eye Honor. His work has also been featured on or in Topic, HBO, Netflix, PBS, Time, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic.

Monroe holds a master's degree in Film Direction from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated with honors. He also earned a degree from the University of Houston's School of Communication.

Most recently, Monroe's four-part documentary quadtych, Racquet, made its world premiere at the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
