David Bauer, born in Chicago in 1917, experienced a more successful acting career in Europe than in his native country. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was caught up in the anti-Communist hysteria that swept the United States, particularly Hollywood, in the 1950s. As a result, Bauer left the US and settled in Great Britain.
In the UK, Bauer found a niche in British television, playing a diverse range of roles, including crooked American businessmen, attorneys, and other characters. He appeared in several notable series, including The Saint (1962),The Element of Doubt (1962),and the memorable episode "Living in Harmony" (1967) from the fondly remembered series The Prisoner (1967).
Bauer also made appearances in The London Beat (1972),an episode of the American cop series shot in England, where he played an American mob boss. Despite his success in television, Bauer did not appear in many films during his time in England, with his most notable roles being in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965),where he played a judge, and Patton (1970),as American Lt. Gen. Harry Buford.
In addition to his film and television work, Bauer also worked on the British stage, both as an actor and director. Tragically, Bauer's life was cut short when he passed away in London in 1973, at the age of 55.
