Deran Sarafian embarked on a filmmaking journey by attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and subsequently working for the renowned film producer Roger Corman on projects such as ROCK N ROLL HIGH SCHOOL.
Inspired by European filmmakers, Deran relocated to Rome where he began writing and rapidly sold and directed his inaugural low-budget independent feature film, THE FALLING, starring Dennis Christopher and Lynn-Holly Johnson.
Following his return to the United States, Deran continued to direct genre thrillers, including GUNMEN, TO DIE FOR, DEATH WARRANT, and BACK IN THE USSR, starring the acclaimed filmmaker Roman Polanski.
The critical acclaim of these films led to his first Hollywood blockbuster feature, TERMINAL VELOCITY, starring the talented Charlie Sheen, Natassja Kinski, and James Gandolfini.
By the end of the 1990s, Deran transitioned into television, where he has since become one of the most prolific directors and producers in the industry today.
Deran has garnered numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI) award for HOUSE M.D., starring the esteemed Hugh Laurie.
As a co-executive producer, Deran oversaw the production of over forty episodes of HOUSE, and directed twenty-three of the first one hundred episodes.
For his contributions to the series, Deran received the AFI Award for Best Director in 2007, and was nominated for two Primetime Emmys, and won two People's Choice Awards in 2008 and 2009.
Deran has produced and directed network pilots, including K-VILLE and PAST LIFE for Fox, as well as over one hundred episodes of critically acclaimed network, cable, and streaming series, such as the CSI franchise, LOST, SWAMP THING, GAME OF SILENCE, HEMLOCK GROVE, HELL ON WHEELS, DOMINION, CROSSBONES, LEGENDS, THE STRAIN, and THE RETURNED.
