As Derrick entered his teenage years, his family relocated to Opa-Locka, Florida, where he spent the next few years developing a strong foundation in academics and extracurricular activities. However, his life took a dramatic turn when his father relocated the family to Orlando, Florida, sparking a new chapter in Derrick's life.
After completing his high school education, Derrick pursued higher education and football, attending Albany State College in Georgia. Although he did not make the football team, he remained resilient and later transferred to Seminole Community College, where he earned his Associate Arts Degree. This significant achievement opened doors for him to try out for the University of Central Florida's football team, which he successfully joined and spent two years with.
Following his time at the University of Central Florida, Derrick's career path took an unexpected turn. A friend's mother, who recognized his natural comedic timing and ability to make people laugh, suggested he explore the world of commercials and television. This advice proved to be a turning point in his life, as he began landing roles in various TV spots and commercials in Orlando.
However, Derrick's big break came when a fellow server at Planet Hollywood Orlando introduced him to the stunt coordinator of the film "Rosewood". The coordinator was looking for a tough, black stuntman with dialogue delivery skills, and Derrick's unique combination of football background and acting experience made him an ideal candidate. After a successful audition, Derrick landed the role and worked on the film, which marked a significant milestone in his career.
The success of "Rosewood" led to appearances in several TV shows and movies, including "The Ken and Kel Show" on Nickelodeon and "First-Time Felon" on HBO Films. With his confidence boosted, Derrick decided to take the leap and move to Los Angeles, where he continued to pursue his acting career.
In Los Angeles, Derrick landed roles in a range of projects, including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with Sarah Michelle Gellar, "24" with Kiefer Sutherland, "Boston Legal" with William Shatner, "Charmed" with Alyssa Milano, "Scorpion" with Elyes Gabel, and "Life of a King" with Cuba Gooding Jr.
Throughout his career, Derrick has remained committed to his passion for voice acting.
