Here is the biography of Dick Cavett:
Richard Alva Cavett was born on November 19, 1936, in Gibbon, Nebraska, to educators Erabel "Era" (Richards) and Alva Bayard Cavett. He spent his childhood in Lincoln, Nebraska, before attending Yale University, where he initially struggled with depression caused by bipolar disorder. Cavett switched his major to drama and graduated from Yale.
After college, Cavett worked as a writer for Jack Paar's "The Tonight Show" and later for Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." He also wrote for the notoriously unsuccessful "The Jerry Lewis Show" in 1963, before returning to Carson's show.
Cavett launched a career as a stand-up comic, possibly influenced by Woody Allen, whom he discovered for Paar. He eventually became a successful talk show host, known for attracting guests who rarely appeared on television, such as Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, and Marlon Brando.
Cavett married actress Carrie Nye in 1964 and remained married to her for 42 years, until her death. He married writer Martha Rogers in 2010, his second marriage.
