Duncan, a Canadian actor of great renown, hails from Calgary, Alberta, where he was raised with a passion for the performing arts. He went on to attend York University in Toronto, graduating in 1986 with an Honors Bachelor Degree in Performance. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career, as he joined the esteemed Shaw Festival ensemble in Niagara on the Lake, immersing himself in the world of Edwardian drama for four seasons.
Following his time at the Shaw Festival, Duncan became a member of the Stratford Festival Young Company, spending three seasons at the largest classical theatre festival in North America. Since the late 1980s, he has performed in numerous theaters across the country, honing his craft and leaving a lasting impression on audiences.
In the 1990s, Duncan was an associate artist with the Necessary Angel Theatre company in Toronto, a company dedicated to the development of new Canadian plays. He was also a member of the Theatre Junction ensemble in Calgary, further expanding his repertoire. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with numerous award nominations, including two Dora Mavor Moore Awards for his work on 'Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love' for Crow's Theatre, and 'Glenn' for Necessary Angel.
In addition, Duncan has been twice nominated for Betty Mitchell acting awards for his performances in 'The Good Life' for Theatre Junction, and 'Frozen' for Sage Theatre. His outstanding work has also earned him two Tyrone Guthrie awards from the Stratford Festival, as well as an Ampia award for best actor in 2012 and 2013 for his portrayal of Mr. Toole in the AMC television series Hell on Wheels (2011).
Duncan's extensive body of work also includes a memorable appearance as Cornelius Slotter in the first and only season of CBC's Strange Empire (2014).
