Joseph Michael Hill, professionally known as Dusty Hill, was born in Dallas, Texas, and spent his formative years in the Lakewood neighborhood of East Dallas. Alongside his brother Rocky Hill and future ZZ Top bandmate Frank Beard, Hill began his musical journey by playing with various local bands in Texas, including the Warlocks, the Cellar Dwellers, and American Blues.
As Hill's musical career progressed, he relocated to Houston, where he joined forces with Billy Gibbons to form the iconic rock band ZZ Top in 1969. Since then, Hill has served as the band's bassist and has also lent his vocals to a select few songs, while Gibbons has handled lead vocals for the majority of their discography.
In addition to his work with ZZ Top, Hill has made appearances in several films and television shows, including the 1990 film Back to the Future Part III and an episode of the eleventh season of the animated series King of the Hill, in which Hank Hill is depicted as Dusty's cousin.
