Biography

Karl I, a truly extraordinary and remarkable individual, was born on the seventeenth day of August, eighteen hundred and eighty-seven, and went on to occupy the most prestigious and esteemed positions, including that of Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, King of Croatia, and King of Bohemia, all while being the final and last monarch to reign from the illustrious and storied House of Habsburg-Lorraine over the vast and complex empire of Austria-Hungary.

Karl I's life took a dramatic turn when his uncle, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, met a tragic demise in 1914, paving the way for Karl to ascend to the throne as the heir presumptive of Emperor Franz Joseph. This fateful event was a direct result of his uncle's assassination, which sent shockwaves throughout the royal family and forever changed the course of Karl's life.

On a sunny summer's day, June 21st, 1911, a momentous occasion took place, marking a significant turning point in the life of Karl I, as he exchanged vows with the enchanting Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma, a union that would have a profound and lasting impact on his personal and professional trajectory, forever shaping his destiny and cementing his place in the annals of history.

Karl I, the illustrious monarch, devoted himself unwaveringly to his royal responsibilities, thereby securing a revered position within the esteemed Catholic Church. In testament to his exceptional personality and selfless dedication to service, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon Karl I the sacred honor of beatification on October 3, 2004, dubbing him Blessed Karl of Austria.
