G. B. Jones is a multifaceted Canadian artist, filmmaker, musician, and publisher of zines, residing in Toronto, Canada. Her artistic endeavors have been showcased in galleries worldwide, and her films have been screened at numerous film festivals across Canada and abroad. Her most recent musical project is Opera Arcana.
From the early 1980s to the late 1990s, Jones was an integral part of the experimental post-punk band Fifth Column, performing duties as drummer, guitarist, and backing vocalist. She was one of the co-founders of the group, which she contributed to for nearly two decades.
G. B. Jones has directed and appeared in a variety of underground films, showcasing her versatility as a filmmaker. In 1990, she and Bruce LaBruce organized a series of J.D.s movie nights in London, Toronto, Montreal, Buffalo, New York, and San Francisco, screening their no-budget films shot on Super 8 mm film. The Troublemakers premiered during this time and left a lasting impact, although it was rarely screened afterwards until the mid-2000s. In 1991, she starred in Bruce LaBruce's feature film No Skin Off My Ass, which has been praised by Gus Van Sant as Kurt Cobain's favorite movie.
Throughout her career, Jones has utilized a range of mediums to create her films, including Super 8 mm and analog video. Her most notable work from the 1990s is perhaps The Yo-Yo Gang, released in 1992, a 30-minute exploitation film about girl gangs. The film features a cast of well-known musicians, including Fifth Column members Caroline Azar and Beverly Breckenridge.
After a 13-year development period, Jones' film The Lollipop Generation premiered on April 3, 2008, at the Images Festival in Toronto. The film stars Jena von Brucker, Mark Ewert, Calvin Johnson, Joel Gibb, Jen Smith, and numerous other musicians, performers, and artists.
