Ian MacKaye, a prominent figure in the Washington, D.C. punk scene, co-founded the influential post-hardcore band Fugazi in 1987 alongside Brendan Canty, Joe Lally, and Guy Picciotto. Prior to Fugazi, MacKaye was an integral member of several notable bands, including Egg Hunt, Embrace, Minor Threat, Skewbald/Grand Union, and Teen Idles.
In addition to his musical endeavors, MacKaye was driven to document the thriving punk community in Washington, D.C. He established Dischord Records in 1980, a label that has since become synonymous with the city's punk movement. Over the years, Dischord has released a diverse range of music, from hardcore punk to indie rock and beyond.
In 1998, Dischord released a film by acclaimed director Jem Cohen, titled Instrument (1999). This cinematic masterpiece is a thought-provoking compilation of Fugazi's studio and tour footage, carefully curated to showcase the band's evolution over a decade.
