J. M. DeMatteis was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and began his career as a professional musician and rock music journalist before transitioning to the comic book industry.
DeMatteis has written for many iconic characters, including Spider-Man and Justice League, earning him numerous accolades, including the Eisner Award.
His original graphic novels, such as Seekers Into The Mystery, Blood: A Tale, The Last One, and Mercy, have received widespread critical acclaim.
The autobiographical Brooklyn Dreams was chosen by the ALA as one of the Ten Best Graphic Novels and was praised by Booklist as "a classic of the form."
Moonshadow, another one of DeMatteis's works, was included in Gene Kanenberg, Jr's 2008 book 500 Essential Graphic Novels and was hailed as one of the finest fantasy graphic novels ever created.
DeMatteis has also worked in television and movies, writing for live-action and animation, as well as creating screenplays for Fox, Disney Feature Animation, and other major studios.
In 2006, DeMatteis released the acclaimed children's fantasy Abadazad, which Entertainment Weekly praised as "one of those very rare fantasy works that can enchant preteen kids and 40-year old fanboys..."
DeMatteis's 2009 graphic novel, The Life and Times of Savior 28, was called "one of the finest superhero stories of the decade" by Newsarama.
In 2010, HarperCollins published DeMatteis's fantasy novel Imaginalis, which the School Library Journal said "will delight readers who imagine themselves in the pages of their favorite books."
DeMatteis has also written for various DC and Marvel titles, including Phantom Stranger, Justice League Dark, Justice League 3000, and Scooby Apocalypse.
In animation, he has contributed episodes to series such as Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ben 10, Teen Titans Go, and others, as well as writing animated features like Batman vs. Robin, Batman: Bad Blood, and Constantine: City of Demons.
More recently, DeMatteis has written animated movies such as Superman: Red Son and Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons, as well as DC's Justice League Infinity and Marvel's Ben Reilly: Spider-Man.
Current projects include the novella The Excavator, Marvel's Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt, and the Spellbound Comics DeMultiverse Kickstarter, which is launching five new DeMatteis titles.
DeMatteis continues to teach Imagination 101, a workshop exploring the practicalities and metaphysics of writing for comics, graphic novels, and animation, and is also the founder of Creation Point, a story consultation service.
