Biography

Jake Hess, a legendary American vocalist, left an indelible mark on the southern gospel music scene, distinguished by his powerful, emotive performances that captivated audiences across the nation. His remarkable musical odyssey commenced at the tender age of sixteen, when he joined the esteemed John Daniel Quartet, making his recorded debut on the iconic track "Just a Prayer Away", a milestone that would set the stage for his illustrious career. Throughout his remarkable journey, Hess would go on to collaborate with numerous esteemed groups, including the Hess Brothers Quartet, Sunny South Quartet, and Melody Masters Quartet, solidifying his reputation as a master vocalist and a driving force in the southern gospel genre.

From 1948 to 1963, Charles H. "Hess" Smith, a renowned vocalist, spent an impressive 15-year tenure with the esteemed Statesmen Quartet, a remarkable period during which the group accomplished a multitude of notable achievements. Notably, they released numerous recordings on prestigious labels such as Columbia Records and RCA Victor, further solidifying their reputation as a prominent musical entity.

In the autumnal season of 1980, a quintet of esteemed vocalists, comprising Hess, Lister, Rozell, James Blackwood, and J.D. Sumner, converged to form the renowned southern gospel ensemble, Masters V, which embarked on a fruitful touring career spanning from 1981 to 1988, prior to being compelled to disband due to the onset of various health issues that ultimately necessitated the retirement of several key members from their roles as full-time singers.

After departing from the Statesmen Quartet in 1963, a pivotal moment in his illustrious career, Lanny Hess embarked upon his most ambitious endeavor yet, the formation of his "dream" group, the Imperials, a musical ensemble that would go on to revolutionize the genre of Contemporary Christian Music.

Initially, the Imperials faced a significant amount of resistance from their peers, who were skeptical of their innovative approach, which featured the unconventional use of electric guitars and drums in gospel music. However, despite these early challenges, the Imperials persevered and went on to become trailblazers in the genre, earning a well-deserved induction into the prestigious Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Throughout their illustrious career, the Imperials had the extraordinary privilege of serving as the backing group for the legendary Elvis Presley, a partnership that lasted from 1966 to 1971. In a testament to the high esteem in which Elvis held Lanny Hess, the King of Rock and Roll himself publicly acknowledged the singer as his favorite.

As the years went by, Jake Hess, a renowned vocalist, made the difficult decision to part ways with the Imperials in 1967, citing health concerns as the primary reason. This marked a significant turning point in his illustrious career.

In the years that followed, Hess continued to nurture his passion for music, teaming up with his children, Becky and Chris, to form the group "The Jake Hess Sound". This collaborative effort allowed him to share his talents with a new generation, while also fostering a sense of family and unity.

Furthermore, Hess's remarkable voice was also featured on the television broadcasts of the esteemed evangelist, Dr. Gene Scott, in the late 1970s. This notable appearance showcased his incredible range and versatility as a singer, cementing his status as a legend in the music industry.

Noted musician, Hess, enjoyed a distinguished solo career, garnering numerous Grammy Awards during his tenure with RCA Victor.

In the latter stages of his illustrious career, Hess made a significant impact by appearing on the esteemed Bill Gaither Homecoming concerts and videos.

These performances showcased his remarkable talent, featuring iconic appearances at prominent venues across the United States, including the revered Kennedy Center and the historic Ryman Auditorium.

Additionally, Hess's final years saw him take his remarkable skills to the beautiful Hawaiian islands and Europe, leaving a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.

His remarkable career, marked by numerous accolades and unforgettable performances, cemented Hess's place as a true music legend.
