Biography

Jan Hřebejk, a celebrated Czech filmmaker and actor, made his entrance into the world on June 27, 1967, in the vibrant city of Prague. Following his high school graduation in 1987, he embarked on a journey of artistic discovery by enrolling at the prestigious Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, also known as FAMU, from 1987 to 1991. During his tenure at FAMU, Hřebejk had the opportunity to work alongside his fellow student and future collaborator, Petr Jarchovský, who would go on to become a talented screenwriter.

Petr Hřebejk, a talented filmmaker, made a significant impact during his time at Florida A&M University (FAMU),where he honed his skills by directing and producing two short films, "Co všechno chcete vědět o sexu a bojíte se to prožít" (1988) and "L. P. 1948" (1989),both of which were meticulously scripted by the accomplished writer Petr Zelenka.

In addition to his work in short films, Hřebejk also made his professional directorial debut with a short film for Czech TV, "Nedělejte nic, pokud k tomu nemáte vážný důvod" (1991),which was once again penned by the prolific writer Zelenka.

As his films garnered attention from both viewers and critics, Hřebejk's work began to gain recognition in student film festivals, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.

Ondřej Hřebejk, a multifaceted individual, pursued his passion for filmmaking by co-authoring a comedy screenplay with his collaborator, Jarchovský, drawing inspiration from his own summer camp experiences.

This creative endeavor, titled Pejme písen dohola, would later evolve into a feature-length film under the direction of Ondřej Trojan in 1990, bringing Hřebejk's imaginative vision to life on the big screen.

Moreover, Hřebejk's academic pursuits led him to adapt his FAMU graduate thesis, a unique interpretation of Egon Hostovský's novel Dobrocinny vecírek, into a film in 1992.

The renowned Czech filmmaker, Hřebejk, continued to showcase his impressive directorial skills with his subsequent projects, which included the highly acclaimed rock and roll comedy, Big Beat, set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1950s. This cinematic masterpiece, penned by the talented Jarchovský, and inspired by the imaginative storytelling of Petr Šabach, went on to achieve unprecedented box office success, cementing Hřebejk's status as a leading figure in the Czech film industry.

Big Beat's impressive accolades included a total of four Czech Lion awards, with Hřebejk himself receiving the prestigious recognition of Best Director, alongside the coveted award for Best Film. This outstanding achievement was a testament to Hřebejk's exceptional direction and his ability to bring his creative vision to life on the big screen.

In addition to his work in feature films, Hřebejk also demonstrated his versatility as a director by taking on a children's TV series, Kde padají hvězdy, in 1996. This popular program, which was syndicated across Europe, showcased Hřebejk's ability to craft engaging and entertaining content for a younger audience, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.

In the subsequent calendar year, the dynamic duo comprising Hřebejk and Jarchovský garnered accolades from the esteemed Film and Television Association, as well as the prestigious Literary Fund, in recognition of their substantial contributions to the realm of dramatic television programming.

Their remarkable achievement was predicated upon the creation of three episodes for the popular TV series Bachelors, which showcased their exceptional writing prowess.

Subsequently, the same creative team responsible for the critically acclaimed film Big Beat collaborated on two additional cinematic endeavors, Cosy Dens (1999) and Divided We Fall (2000),both of which enjoyed immense popularity within the Czech Republic, cementing their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of Czech cinema.
