Janet Scott Batchler is a multifaceted creative force, credited as a writer alongside her partner Lee Batchler for a plethora of projects, including the notable films POMPEII, SMOKE AND MIRRORS, and BATMAN FOREVER, among many others. Her impressive portfolio extends to her work as a director and producer, with a recent focus on the latter capacity.
One of her most notable ventures as an executive producer is RUNNING FOR GRACE, a poignant indie drama that explores themes of life and prejudice on a coffee plantation in 1910s Hawaii. Directed by David Cunningham and starring Matt Dillon and Jim Caviezel, the film premiered in 2018 and is a testament to Janet's versatility as a producer.
Janet's transition into directing was marked by the success of her award-winning short film THE SPITTIN' IMAGE, based on the short story by Walt Wangerin. She has since written and directed several other shorts, and her accomplishments have been recognized by the prestigious Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute, where she graduated.
As a dedicated advocate for women in the film industry, Janet served on the Board of Directors of the Alliance of Women Directors for six years before being named an emeritus board member. Her commitment to empowering women in film is evident in her work as a guest speaker and teacher, where she has made a lasting impact on the next generation of filmmakers.
Janet is currently a member of the Faculty of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, where she teaches screenwriting to both graduate and undergraduate students. Her innovative approach has led to the development of pioneering classes in Collaboration and Adaptation, as well as the most popular class ever offered by the division – a comprehensive analysis of the Harry Potter franchise.
